Review Key

Thanks Amy, for reminding me! =)

Here's the key. Corrections on...

#1 sec^2(x) - tan^2(x)=1, obviously
#15 add 5pi/6 + n*pi
#17 should be pi/6, 7pi/6
#34-36 replace all sqrt(65) with sqrt(85), simplify accordingly
#40&41 denominator inside the square root should be 26
#43 should be 7pi/6, 11pi/6...

This is a horrible key - too many silly errors. Time to make a new one!

HP Precalc Chp 4 Review Key

HERE is the KEY. It's actually an old version with ONE error.

Error on #12...the midline should be on one, and the vertical shift will put the "quarter points" at 1/2 and 3/2.,..sorry for the confusion. The graph should actually look like this:

QUESTION LOG:

On #45:
F(x)=(square root x)+3
G(x)=x2 -3
You restricted it as
(0, infinity)...but shouldn't it be (including -3, infinity)?

Answer: The best way to answer this question is with the graphs. Notice that in order to make the graph a true reflection over the line y=x, that you'd need to cut it at the vertex, which happens when x=0.


Also #31:
I did it twice and got 4x-20(square root x)+1, and you posted 4x-20(square root x) +25

Answer: I think the problem comes when evaluating -12(sqrt(x)-1)...you should get -12sqrt(x)+12, which will then give you 25 for the constant.

#48: How are they inverses if they're the same equation...? I'm confused! :(
Answer: Well, if you take f(g(x)) you should get x, right? And also g(f(x))=x...and really that is the way you would verify that they are inverses. Also, if you look at the graph, you would see that it would reflect onto itself over the line y=x (assuming f is restricted to [0,3]. It doesn't happen very often, but this is a case where a function is an inverse of itself.

Reals include rational and irrational, irrational is just irrational. Remember that complex numbers include REAL and IMAGINARY and COMBINATIONS of the two. Review number structures. Here's the Powerpoint if you want to look at it again.

8-12) Check your work w/graphing calc
13-14) Divide and disregard remainder.
13) y=x^5-x^4-x^3-x^2-x+2
14) y=x^2-x
